Hilde explains: how UV rays prematurely age your skin.

UVA rays: silent accelerators of skin aging.
Did you know that UV rays are one of the biggest causes of skin aging? Your skin doesn't just age over the years, but especially due to repeated exposure to sunlight.
UVA rays (A for aging): penetrate deeply into the skin and oxidize collagen and elastin, causing them to break down. Prolonged exposure to UVA radiation leads to:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin laxity
- Loss of volume and elasticity
- Pigmentation spots and a dull complexion
This process is known as photo-aging: skin aging caused by sunlight, particularly by UVA radiation. Prolonged exposure to UVA rays thus accelerates skin aging, even without burning.
When should you apply sunscreen?
As soon as the UV index reaches 3 or higher, it's important to apply sunscreen to your skin. Not only to prevent sunburn, but also to slow down skin aging.
Tips for protecting your skin from the sun:
- Do not only apply in the morning, but reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when you are in the sun.
- Reapply sunscreen after sweating, swimming, or toweling off.
- Don't forget to apply sunscreen to your neck and hands as well, since these areas are often exposed to UV rays.
Applying sunscreen daily is a simple, yet important step in your anti-aging care.
